Welcome! In just a few weeks, Middle School halls will be bustling with students and with teachers ready to return or begin anew. I am excited to work with the newest members of our community, as well as those who have been with us for a while.

This year we welcome several new faculty members. Ginny Lam will teach Mandarin in grades six, seven, and eight; Angela Finn will assume the role of Library/Media Specialist; and Lorelei Lindow will be Middle School Counselor. We also welcome Julie Folsom, previously a fifth grade teacher at Ravenscroft, who will be teaching Reading/Literature and Grammar/Composition in sixth grade.

Did you know that one of the top reasons families choose independent schools is for safety? One can especially understand that mindset for Middle School, which can be a vulnerable time for our young adolescents. The first thought that comes to mind for most people is physical safety – keeping children protected. That is important, however, when I think of safety, I think beyond physical comfort.

What comes to mind first and foremost, and what I make sure to share, is an environment that provides a caring and knowledgeable faculty who choose to work with young adolescents a challenging age, to be sure! I think of the reassurance you, as parents, have that your children are well taken care of, that we nurture our young charges and engage them in the joy of learning, that they will be encouraged to reach their potential, academic and otherwise. I think of a learning space that allows appropriate risk-taking while developing self-confidence and self-esteem. There is safety in knowing that your children will be known – sometimes even more than children this age think they want to be; yet, they, too, find comfort and safety in the classrooms and offices of caring faculty and advisors and collegiality of peers with whom they have forged bonds.

And there is comfort in knowing that we strive to form true partnerships with you, our parents, as we work to ensure an environment that provides the safety we all seek. Know, too, that in working toward that goal, you can approach any one of us in Middle School at any time and you will be heard and listened to. With that in mind, I invite you to engage with us as we begin another year on the adventure called Middle School!
