Dear 8th Grade Families,

I cannot believe the holidays are already upon us. The eighth grade has had a busy month, and I know students and teachers alike are looking forward to a restful and family-filled Thanksgiving next week.

Thank you to those of you who contributed to our bake sales this week. As of this morning, we have raised $394.80 toward our $800 goal, which will go toward purchasing gifts for five children through the Guardian Angel program. The sixth and seventh graders will be hosting additional bake sales once we return from the Thanksgiving holiday. Additionally, the Middle School is hosting a Food Drive from November 13 through December 1. Collection boxes are located in each advisor’s room and all collected items will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Please refer to the Food Bank’s Most Needed Items List for further details.

The DC trip was also a success last week. It was truly a bonding experience for all of us– on the buses, in the museums, at the 4-H Center, and even in our downtime together. We played cards, sang at the top of our lungs, and had incredibly thoughtful conversations. Due to points accumulated on the trip, we now have four advisories tied for first: Cummings, Ewing, McAllister, and Phillips. Please see this link for all of our pictures and videos from the trip.

We are starting to prepare for midterm exams, which will happen on December 18 and 19. Students will have their science exams on that Monday, and they will present their Ravens in Action research on that Tuesday. Eighth grade has 10:30am dismissal on both days. If students are in an upper school class, they have been contacted by Mrs. Salzano with regard to those exams. Also, if your child is going to be absent during the exam period, please have him/her tell his/her advisor and Mrs. Salzano, so we can coordinate a make-up time.

The next two 8th grade pizza lunches and dress down days will take place on Friday, December 1 and Friday, January 5. Parents can participate by supplying fruit, veggies and dessert, or by helping to set up, serve and clean up. Please see the SignUpGenius for volunteer options. The school supplies the following types of pizza: cheese, pepperoni, gluten free and non-dairy/vegan. If your child has an allergy or dietary restriction that requires a different accommodation, please notify Michelle O’Donnell or Julie McGinnis.

Recently, we held an information session for parents on the important topic of vaping. During the session, “What Parents Need to Know about Teens, E-cigarettes and Vaping,” we explained what vaping is, the various products being used as well as shared many of the health risks associated with the behavior. Included are additional resources, including a webinar from Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD.org), a global non-profit organization with whom Ravenscroft partners for support of our education efforts.

We know this is an important topic — at home and at school — and hope you will find this information helpful. We will be having additional information sessions and community conversations on the topic before the end of the year. Please be on the lookout for more information.Should you or someone close to you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Kendra Varnell, Middle School Counselor.
