We’ve been exploring sinking and floating, with solids and liquids. This past week students received a four inch by four inch piece of Aluminum foil. The goal, to make a boat that would float some pennies. Folding water-tight corners turned out to be a difficult, but important skill. Dispersing the pennies throughout the boat also helped the boat hold more cargo. In the end, though, everyone’s boat sank!
Now, can anyone build a better boat at home? Use the same size piece of foil. The record (that I witnessed) was 29 pennies. Remember, don’t count the last penny, the one that made the boat sink.
