As we look forward to the 2014-2015 school year, we will continue to embrace all the possibilities that exist for our youngest Ravens as they prepare for a future that we cannot yet see or imagine. Our Lead From Here movement will intentionally support their efforts to learn more about themselves (Leading Self), about communicating and collaborating with others (Leading with Others), and about dreaming and acting on behalf of a larger community (Changing Your World).

This important work that guides our citizen leaders as they learn and grow continues to build upon the solid foundation established by our Character Tree and Honor Code, which can be found in the Lower School Handbook. A printed version of the handbook will be sent home with students on the first day of school, and we ask that each one of you spend time reviewing it with your children. The Statement of Community section is an important one that outlines our expectations for behavior and includes the Character Tree traits, Citizen Leader Framework, honor code, and dress code. Taking time to discuss these expectations with your children at the beginning of each year helps support everyone on their quest to be their best selves, and ultimately provides for the best possible learning environment here at school.

We are excited about the increased interest in our Lower School experience from new families. That interest has allowed us to add an additional section to our fifth grade and kindergarten programs in order to welcome these new students to our community while also maintaining our small class sizes. To ensure we continue to best meet the needs of our students during this transition, we have asked some of our current faculty to shift to a new grade level and have also hired some additional teachers who will join our community in August. Whitney Frendt (first grade instructor) and Anna Thorp (kindergarten instructor) will not be returning to Ravenscroft in August.  Mrs. Frendt will be staying home with her daughter and Mrs. Thorp has accepted a full-time research position.

The 2014-2015 school year promises to be another exciting journey filled with many joys and successes. Please make sure to visit the Hobbs’ Highlights blog to stay informed about all the amazing things going on throughout the year in Lower School and to read some personal thoughts and reflections from myself and other guest faculty bloggers. This blog continues to serve as the main source of written communication with parents and is updated at least twice a month.

I look forward to seeing all new Ravenscroft students and their parents on Aug. 19 for orientation and all of our returning students on Aug. 20! In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any questions or comments you have. You may reach me by phone at (919) 861-2110, ext. 2542 or by email at phobbs@ravenscroft.org.
