We Believe in STEM+
We believe in STEM+.
We believe in the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in the lives of our learners.
We believe that experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are enhanced when integrated with Fine Arts (+).
Add the “A” in Fine Arts, and STEM+ = STEAM, which is another way to describe what we believe.
Our belief in STEM+ is coupled with our commitment, and as we look ahead to the 2016-2017 school year, we are excited to share a few of the opportunities that will be added to our Lower School community.
We have been chosen to participate in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Using The Outdoors to Teach Experiential Science teacher education program (UTOTES). This program will involve an on-site teacher education program that will include six workshops over the course of the school year to help foster a culture of outdoor awareness and environmental stewardship.
We will be increasing the number of Chromebooks available to our 3rd and 4th grade students so they have more mobile access to technology and online resources. We will also be purchasing new, touch-enabled Chromebooks for our 1st and 2nd grade students that will provide more flexible options for our younger students in the classroom and center area.
There will be a new after school club that will be offered all year called Power On, Power Up. The club will focus on design thinking concepts and encourage students to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve within the context of building circuits, programming robots, and using a variety of materials to invent and create through the lens of an engineer.
Our 4th and 5th grade students will be using a new adaptive math resource called Think Through Math. This online program provides individual learning paths that support and enhance our differentiated math instruction. It features access to live teacher support and combines direct instruction with practice problems and assessments.
We will be adding a Spirit Team to our after school groups that already include choir, band, and drama. This group will generate school spirit by dancing at events throughout the school year. The group will perform at pep rallies, sporting events, and Tree Talks and will showcase the Ravenscroft spirit.
And this is just a sampling of our STEM+ initiatives for next year!
We are also extremely grateful for a generous gift that will allow us to have our own Makerspace in Lower School next year. We will be transforming the Raven Haven modular unit behind the Kindergarten building into a space for hands-on experiences that will encourage students to design, experiment, build, and invent. A team of teachers will be working this summer to research and design specific STEM+ challenges for each grade level that will occur is this Makerspace throughout the school year.
We believe in STEM+ and are beyond excited for all these additions and many more!
